The Beach

I have not been getting out and enjoying beautiful Hawaii enough since Evangeline was born.  Today we met some friends at the beach and had such a wonderful time.

Evangeline fell asleep on the way there.  She slept for awhile in the carseat on the beach.  I was glad because I could keep her in the shade more easily.  Even with her super ugly spiffy rash guard swim suit, I worried about sunburn.
There was a class of what looked like yoga on paddle boards.  Pretty neat actually and something I'd never heard of.  The beach is right along the military and civilian runway so we see planes take off quite often as you can see in the background.

Thea brought along her snorkel.  I thought she had just brought the mask until we were leaving and saw the snorkel part on the ground on the way back to the car.  Glad it was still there.

Sleeping beauty awakes to check out her surroundings.

The girls had so much fun playing with their friends Ashley, Beth and Kate.  They have been such a blessing to us.

We tried sitting in the sand for awhile.  She was confused when she went to suck on her fingers and they were all sandy.

Ashton made this hole and it was huge!  You can't tell at all from the picture, but Gideon could stand inside of it.  Ashton had hoped to make it deep enough for himself to stand in but we didn't have enough time.

We stayed almost 2 1/2 hours which is quite the day for us.  Evangeline did not even cry when I put her feet in the cold water.  Next time I want to actually take her out for a swim...sort of.  Gideon was wiped out.  He is taking quite the nap now.

Fitness Friday

It's been a long time since I've written about exercise and all.  Most recently I've started Jillian's Michael's 30 Day Shred.  I finished day 5 and am feeling great.  The first day was soooo painful.  I was shaking through the whole thing and thought I was going to die.  The following day I could hardly walk down the stairs and was in a lot of pain.  However, by day 3 I was able to get through the workout and not even be sore the next day.  How encouraging that is!  Today I also started to track my calories again and hope that with a combination of exercise and healthy eating I can get back on the right track.

FYI-you can find level on the the Shred on YouTube for free.  That's what I'm using now and will buy the DVD for $8 here soon.

More 6 months

I totally missed 5 months with our stickers, but I rallied for 6 months and got a few cute pictures.  Can't believe how she is filling up the quilt!

Six months!!!

Oh sweet baby girl.  How on earth did you get to be six months already?  Didn't we have a talk when you were about 4 days old about staying little and growing up as slow as possible?  You are so big!  Wearing 18-24 month clothes, sitting up like a pro and even starting to crawl around.  You love to crawl to your daddy or mama's feet and sometimes get stuck under the table.  Right at six months your first two little bottom teeth broke through giving us a rest from a long string of exhausting nights.  Sophie the giraffe, cloth wipes and your little stuffed rabbit from Grandma are some of your favorite toys.  Thankfully, you have gotten much better about riding in the car and will sit or sleep peacefully while we drive.  Ashton sits next to you and loves to make you laugh.

You are such a sweet baby.  You love to cuddle and every nap time and night you lay your head on my shoulder, suck your fingers and fall asleep easily.  Then you sleep in your crib for as long as you need.  You are just so cute, chubby, warm and soft.  I love to kiss your sweet chubby cheeks and see your arms dance and legs kick whenever you see me coming.  I'm just as excited to see you!!

Daddy and I took you across the street to take some pictures of you with a mountain and water view.  You loved sitting in the grass for the first time and pulling it all out.  You brother Giddy ran nearby with a plastic dump truck.  We love you so much.  Thank you for every smile, giggle, coo and sweet sleep on our shoulders.  You are such a blessing and we love you so much.

Money

When Dan and I were first married we were pretty broke.  He was a little gun shy and did not give me access to any accounts.  This was fine with me since he just went ahead and paid the bills, gas and groceries and I worked part time and had my own money to spend if I needed/wanted something.  When I got pregnant, I remember lots of trips to stores where I would see clothes for the baby and he would look at the price tag and say no way.  My response was to be heartbroken.  I didn't understand how he could not want our baby to have special things!  This was the beginning of our money differences.  Now, I would like to point out that I was not a crazy, senseless spender at all.  I understood we could not have expensive baby equipment (all of ours was given to us) or cars, but I did like me some baby clothes!  99% of our clothes came from the resale shop I worked at and I paid for by working for store credit.  We just had different ideas of how to spend money.  He would rather the little extra money we had go to more expensive items at the grocery store or an out to dinner date.

Six weeks after Ashton was born we moved to Virginia and Dan went on sea duty.  It became necessary for him to give me access to the accounts and by that time he had no problem doing that as we had been married for a year and had a chance to witness my frugality.  Dan had our account set up so that when the paycheck came in it would automatically put money aside for kids' college, retirement and into the car payment.  What was left was enough to pay bills, buy groceries and gas and keep the growing kids clothed.  Not much to argue about there, but I did ask permission to buy anything over about $20.

Fast forward a pay grade advancement or two and there started to be more tension over money.  From my perspective I was working my behind off to be frugal.  Baking my own bread, making beans, shopping goodwill and Craigslist, never buying anything for myself etc. and then when I would ask to buy something and be told "no" I started to get very frustrated.  One particular instance stands out in my mind as a turning point for me.  I was eight months pregnant with Gideon and needing to go weekly to the OB for checkups.  The stroller I had was nice, but very heavy.  With my prolapse I would hurt myself getting it out of the trunk because I was so big by that point.  At a trip to Babies R Us I asked Dan if we could by an umbrella stroller.  It was $70.  I hated the little ones and really wanting something nicer that would steer well and last awhile and have a shade.  Dan thought it was ridiculous and suggested getting one from walmart for $10.  I was furious.  We had a talk later that night and I remember saying, "I work so hard to save money for this family and then when I want to buy something you always say no!  Where's the money that I'm saving?  Where is it going?  Are you even noticing?"  I called up my dear friend and mentor and we had a chat about it.  She told me how her and her husband worked things out.  It went something like this.  "Jack gives me a certain amount to spend each pay period.  I am responsible for budgeting that amount for certain expenses and am able to use the remainder for what I want."  She went on to explain that with this set up she was able to give to missionaries or to others without anyone knowing.  She also told me that she would not ask her husband about buying strollers because that would encourage micromanagement...as long as she could budget it of course.

After this conversation I remember sitting on the hill in front of our house next to Dan and telling him about this system.  He thought for awhile and came back to me later that night with a plan.  He asked, "if I give you x amount each pay period will that be enough?"  I would be responsible for groceries, gas, clothes for kids and me and extracurricular activities for the kids".  I felt the amount was way more than I would ever need and told him so, but he said to keep it there and we did.  I quickly discovered that the money went way faster than I ever had thought it would and was very glad he had kept it where he did.  However, it was enough for me to budget in occasional cute baby clothes, a double stroller and other things.

It was so freeing.  Dan felt freed from having to make every little decision about money and having to feel like the bad guy for turning me down and squashing my dreams of cute baby things.  He also knew now that his money was not going to be flitted away to nothing on mindless purchases.  Not to mention he did not have to listen to me talk about strollers or carseats anymore.  I was freed because I was able to save up and buy what I needed and could see the results of my frugal grocery store and Goodwill trips.  I was also able to tithe which had been another point of contention in the past.  Taking a box to mail to a friend was no longer met with, "how much is that going to cost?" and I no longer felt like I had to give a speech to justify each purchase that was not food.

We continue to do our money this way.  I don't know what happens to all the other money.  I'd like to be more involved, but I believe Dan feels like I'm trying to pry when I ask and so I'm trusting him to do what is best for our family with it.  This is easy because he is very frugal and never buys things for himself.  We actually make more money now so sometimes I will find a little "extra" in my allowance.  This is nice because we have 2 more children than we did when we first started this.

That's our money story from my perspective.

A morning at the farmer's market

Today we visited the Kapiolani Farmer's Market for the first time.  It was crazy!  So many, many people.  Next time we will get there when they open at 7:30 to try and avoid the tour buses and crowds.  However, it was a lot of fun to get to see all the different stalls and get some local produce for our family.  I love to see the flowers, too.  I see so many beautiful farmer's market pictures and tried to take some myself.  Hawaii is a little bit different than the mainland's markets and thought someone might be interested.

Driving up to the market you can see the Diamond Head crater.  Not the best picture, but from this angle I could really see it's crater-ness.  We have hiked it before I don't remember thinking "crater" while I did so this was a good angel to see it from.
My very favorite fruit, papayas!  I don't really like them at the grocery store, but fresh they are to die for!
Greens.  A lot of these came home with us.
You can sort of see the crowds in this picture.  Gideon usually wants to walk, but after seeing how many people were around he was more than happy to ride on Daddy's back.
Locally grown pineapples.  They are not as common as one would think.  Dole moved their farms to South America (I believe).  These were grown in Kunia and a certain variety that is supposed to be less acidic.

This is one of the prettiest cycad bushes I have seen.
I dug out the ring sling for this trip and really liked wearing E on my hip in it.  I will be keeping it out.
 Our treat, Hawaiian sweet bread.
My little cutie hanging out in the front seat.

We went by the dance store on the way home because Thea's little feet got bigger.  New tap, ballet and jazz shoes came home with us :)
And this is our loot.  $30 for all.  So worth it.

Braces!!!

Quintin's long awaited date to get braces was yesterday.  He was quite excited as his bottom teeth are crowded and were causing him pain.  Now he has the braces and has a different kind of pain.  Dan is excited for him since he was never able to get braces when he needed them due to financial issues.  I was shocked when they estimated him only having to wear them 16-18 months.  My braces were on 3 1/2 years and my teeth did not even look bad.  Here's our before and after pictures.
